Senegal is in the North Atlantic coast of west Africa. It shares its borders with Mauritania, Mali,
Guinea and Guinea Bissau. It covers the
Republic of Gambia as an enclave on all the three sides with in its
boundaries. . Senegal
got its independence from France in 1960 and formed a federation with
the Gambia called Senegambia in 1982. But
the union was dissolved in 1989. It is the only country in west Africa
that has positively
achieved economic progress
through well planned and executed
macro-economic measures with the help of IMF.
Southern
costal line is full of
muddy estuaries
due to several rivers and rivulets
flowing to the western ocean. The south
and Central areas, but for a the forest area
of Casamance, is grassy land.
The northern cost is all sand
dunes. Behind the sand dunes is sandy
planes extending far into the northern area. A
major segment of north west Senegal is semi desert.
