Niger is a very poor country.  It has no major natural resources.  Uranium mining dwindles as the world demand for the product dropped.  Main industrial activity is Cement, Bricks, textiles, food processing and animal slaughter houses. 63%   Nigeriens out of a total 10.3 million population are below poverty line. 

 Niger receives debt relief aid package from the IMF under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries scheme. The government has to rely  on bilateral or  multilateral assistance - which was suspended following the April 1999 coup d'etat - for operating expenses and public investment.

International Disputes

There are quite a few contentious points for Niger due to lack of demarcation of boundaries.

1.                  Dispute between Niger and Benin over l’Ete  and 14 smaller islands referred to International Court of Justice.

2.                  Benin – Niger- Nigeria demarcation of boundary point.

3.                  Dispute over the Lake Chad region  between Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria.

4.                  Lybian  claim over a sizeable part of Niger in its northern area.
