Republic of Niger  became independent in 1958.  it was a French colony.  But for 35 long years they had to wait till they could conduct an open and fair election in which a democratic set up could come to power.  Civil unrest due to internal insurgencies and coups marred the history of the republic  all these years.  Ultimately a National Reconciliation Council was created and it effected a  transition to civilian rule in 1999.

Niger is a landlocked country.  Algeria, Benin. Burkina Faso, Chad, Lybia, Mali and  Nigeria share boundaries with Niger.  80% of the land is desert  and the remaining 20% is savannah fields.

Literacy level is only 15% in Niger.  4% of the adults are of HIV positive.   High infant mortality rates and low life expectancy are other disadvantages of Niger.
