Nigeria lies in the tropical zone.
The climatic variations are however as diverse as the physical
features. The coastal areas are characterized by normal temperatures of
upto 32 degrees C (90 deg F) but high humidity which makes the nights
extremely hot. In the interior areas, the period from April to October
has low temperatures typical of a wet season and a dry season from
November to March, with midday temperatures crossing 38°C (100°F) but
relatively cool nights. Moderate temperatures are recorded at the Jos
Plateau. The harmattan is a hot and dry wind current
from the northeast, that brings along with it reddish dust from the
desert which causes rise in day temperatures and cool nights. The
southwest wind is accompanied by cloudy and rainy weather.
Average
rainfall along the coast varies from 70 inches in the west to about 170
inches in some parts of the east. Inland it falls to around 50 inches
over most of central Nigeria and only about 20 inches in the extreme
north.
