Republic of Liberia is on the shores of North  Atlantic ocean, located  between Cote d’Ivoire and  Sierra Leon.  The country has had a long independent existence but the problems are from fissures with in.  The Liberians  belong to several tribal groups and the descendants of former slaves in America and the Caribbeans.

Liberia is a poor country with rich natural resources.  They are rich in Iron ore , Timber, diamonds and gold.  They have sufficient  electric power generation as well. But they have had little time to consolidate their wealth for the betterment of the people due the civil unrest.  The civil war in 1989 – 1996 shattered the economy and the whole infrastructure.   Railway lines were scrapped due to long disuse; Highways  deteriorated due to lack of maintenance.

Now 80% of the total population of  3.2 million people live below poverty line. Average life expectancy is low and adult literacy is only 38%.  About 9% of the adult population is HIV infected.
