ECONOMY
Republic of Liberia has been a free country
for more than a century. But
Liberia was always being plagued by
internal disturbances. We cannot say the
whole problems have been solved amicably between rival factions but it
is kept under tight control by ECOMOG, the
Peace Keeping Arm of ECOWAS.
Liberia’s main foreign exchange earner is its
maritime activity. Its maritime registry
has been very popular among shipping lines. Very
many countries in the world have their ships flying Liberian flags as a
flag of convenience.
Liberia has plenty of natural resources. It has plenty of water, mineral resources and
a climate favorable for agriculture. Liberia
has been a producer and
exporter of basic agricultural goods. Manufacturing
industry could not take deep roots because of the prevailing atmosphere
of political instability and civil unrest. It
is this situation that is
being attended to by ECOWAS.
Economy has already started and upward swing. The trend can be accelerated once the policies
of the new government
to improve the macro-economic
edifice of the country. The democratically
elected government, assumed power in 1997, inherited massive
international debts. Foreign investment is
essential for the restoration of the infrastructure
destroyed in the civil wars.
