The Republic of Guinea, is located on the west coast of Africa flanked on the north by Senegal and
Mali and on the east by Mali and the Ivory Coast, on the south by
Liberia and Sierra Leone, on the northwest by Guinea-Bissau and
on the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
Guinea has a diverse geography
and its frontiers are the result of the late 19th century partition of
Africa. The terrain is mostly mountainous and the landscapes are
picturesque. The country can be divided into four with terrain
characteristic of each region. Lower Guinea, the
alluvial coastal plain; Middle Guinea, the mountainous
region of the Futa Jallon from where the Gambia and Senegal rivers
originate; Upper Guinea, a gently undulating plain
with an average elevation of 1,000 ft, savanna country interspersed by
occasional rocky outcrops; and the forested Guinea
Highlands, composed of granites, schists, and quartzites, which
houses Mt. Nimba (about 6,000 ft high), the highest point in the
country and is the source of the The Niger River and its important
tributary, the Milo.
