Gambia has little or no valuable mineral deposits. Main occupation of the people is based on
agriculture and fishing. About 75% of the
people are engaged in farming. Peanuts is the major crop; peanut products, fish, cotton
lint, palm kernels are other main engagements.
Excellent
scope for Fisheries and related industries exists but these are yet to
be developed. Economic progress remains highly dependent
on sustained bilateral or multilateral aid.
International Issues.
There are no contentious issues between the
Gambia and neighbors. In 1991 Senegal and
the Gambia signed a friendship and
cooperation treaty.
