Cape Verde is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, around 600km (450 miles) west-northwest of Senegal comprising of the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, Ilheu Branco, Ilheu Raso, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista, Maio, São Tiago, Fogo and Brava.


All the islands of Cape Verde are of volcanic origin. The main island is Sao Tiago, which is quite hilly (mountainous). Mt. Fogo (2840m/9320 ft.) - the highest peak among the islands is located at Fogo; Santo Antao, which is greener as compared to the other islands, has the maximum amount of rainfall and is a suitable place for the hikers. Cape Verdeans are relatively in a  better position  in terms of Infant mortality ,  life expectancy and Adult literacy in comparison with other west Africans.
